Tom breathes innovation and sustainability. As the strategic sustainability coordinator at Heisterkamp, he works daily on the future of transport and logistics. But besides his job, he is above all a sports enthusiast and soon-to-be proud father! Together with his wife, he is expecting their first child in August.
This isn’t Tom’s first time at Heisterkamp. After gaining experience elsewhere for a few years, he returned to the company. What draws him back? The dynamic environment, short communication lines, and the opportunity to make a real impact.
We interviewed him to get to know the faces behind Heisterkamp.
What does sustainability mean to you?
Sustainability is a broad concept, and for Tom, it has two sides. On the one hand, there's the "boring" side: regulations, reports, and documentation. On the other hand, there’s the exciting part: putting new technologies and innovations into practice.
"At Heisterkamp, I am responsible for the strategic aspect of sustainability. What developments are on the horizon? Where do opportunities lie? And how can we best seize them?"
For years, Heisterkamp has been working on cleaner technologies and more sustainable solutions, such as electric driving and biofuels. "The best part is when a sustainable project is not only good for the environment but also truly works for the customer. It’s thrilling to see an innovation that once seemed impossible become a reality!"
What projects are you currently working on?
Besides sustainability, Tom is involved in various projects, such as evaluating new planning software. "Our current system has served us well, but it's reaching the end of its life and is barely holding up. That’s why we need to look ahead. We want a solid solution that will last for years. It's energizing to map everything out as thoroughly as possible to ultimately arrive at something that benefits the entire organization."

How important is collaboration to you?
A project is only truly successful if everyone can work with it and is happy with it. That’s why collaboration plays a crucial role.
"I work closely with IT, operational departments, and department heads to gather all needs, challenges, and frustrations. Only then can we develop a system that benefits everyone. Achieving success together is the most rewarding thing!"
What advice do you have for new colleagues?
"Walk around, talk to people, visit different departments, and really get to know the company. The most valuable insights don’t come from emails but from chats at the coffee machine or conversations on the work floor. It also makes work much more fun and dynamic!"
How did you get into sustainability?
"My background is in business administration, so I didn’t get into sustainability from a purely green mindset. What appeals to me most is the innovative aspect. How can we take steps forward with new technologies?
I want to make sustainable choices, but not at any cost. It has to work for all parties involved. The challenge of making sustainability practical and feasible is what makes it so interesting!"

What do you do outside of work?
Outside of work, Tom is an avid runner and is training for the Rotterdam Marathon.
"What fascinates me about running is that you always come face to face with yourself. At some point, your body starts protesting, and then it’s all about staying mentally strong and pushing through. And when you finally cross the finish line, that feeling is indescribable!"
He applies the same mindset to his work. "You learn to deal with setbacks, put things into perspective, and maintain discipline. That’s useful everywhere, whether it’s tackling a challenging project or a tough training session."
